Eco Wins: A Sea Change in the Shipping Industry
In a major step forward for global climate action, the shipping industry has become the first sector with internationally mandated emissions targets. Agreed upon at a recent meeting of the United Nations International Maritime Organization (IMO), the decision could mark a turning point for industries, including the coffee industry, that rely on global shipping routes to bring their products to market.
Shipping currently accounts for approximately 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, primarily driven by the use of fossil fuels, such as diesel. Unlike other sectors, it has made little progress over the last decade in reducing its carbon footprint. This new agreement changes that.
Under the new regulations, owners of large international vessels will be required to reduce emissions or face penalties of up to $380 per tonne of CO₂ emitted from burning fuel. This means a dramatic shift in how goods, including coffee beans, are transported around the world.
What Does This Mean for Muskoka Roastery?
At Muskoka Roastery Coffee Co., our commitment to sustainability is woven into everything we do—from our locally roasted beans to our carbon-neutral operations. But as with most specialty coffee roasters, our green coffee beans come from all around the globe—South America, Africa and beyond. That makes ocean shipping a critical piece of our supply chain.
This new IMO mandate is a promising development that aligns with our values. Here’s how:
-
Cleaner Shipping = Cleaner Supply Chain
As ocean carriers are pushed to adopt cleaner, less carbon-intensive fuels, the carbon footprint of our green coffee imports will decline. That directly supports our mission to reduce our environmental impact from bean to cup.
-
Transparency and Accountability
The IMO’s framework introduces new layers of accountability for emissions reporting. This complements our own efforts to measure, reduce and offset emissions across our operations.
-
A Signal to Innovate
Like Muskoka Roastery, many companies are looking for smarter, greener ways to operate. This global regulation sends a strong message: it's time to invest in low-carbon logistics, whether that’s supporting greener shipping providers or optimizing transport routes.
Looking Ahead
We’ve long believed that every cup of coffee has a footprint—and a story. As international shipping becomes part of the climate solution, it’s heartening to know that even the journey of a coffee bean can be made more sustainable.
At Muskoka Roastery, we welcome this change and see it as a vital step toward a better future for coffee, communities and the planet.
