The Power of Forests in Climate Action

Forests are vital to the health of our planet. They absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere, making them essential in combating climate change. However, poor logging practices—such as clear-cutting or logging in sensitive areas—can increase carbon emissions and degrade critical habitats for wildlife. That’s where the Climate-Safe Logging Program comes in.

Nature Canada's program focuses on promoting logging methods that work with nature, not against it. These methods include selective harvesting, protecting old-growth forests, and ensuring that forest ecosystems remain intact so they can continue to serve as natural carbon sinks.

The Reality of Logging’s Climate Impact

Canada’s federal government often promotes logging as a carbon-neutral industry, but a recent report by Nature Canada reveals a starkly different picture: logging is Canada’s third-largest polluting sector, after oil & gas and transportation. Despite this, Canada’s climate action plan overlooks emissions from logging, leaving no clear strategy to ensure that logging companies are doing their part to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect forests.

The Climate-Safe Logging Program is dedicated to changing this narrative by pushing for transparency and accountability in Canada’s logging industry.

Nature Canada is committed to empowering Canadians to take action. They’ve made it easy for you to join the call for accountability by asking your Member of Parliament (MP) to demand transparency on logging emissions. Canada needs a clear strategy to reduce emissions from logging, protect old-growth forests, and ensure that climate polluters are held accountable. With just a few clicks, you can send a letter to your MP and stand up for Canada’s forests and climate.
