There is currently a lot of conversation around Green Energy and whether it is, in fact, the right step to take as we work towards a more sustainable future.

We connected with our partners at Bullfrog Power and felt relieved to read their stance on biomass, energy sourcing and renewable energy carbon footprints – which can be read below.

We hope this information reinforces that it is possible to make a meaningful impact through your choice to support companies that make sustainable initiatives and green practices their top priority.

Bullfrog’s sources

Rest assured, Bullfrog Power does not source from any biomass projects—especially those that burn wood or timber. Protecting the environment is a key pillar of our sourcing practices.

We source our green electricity from small-scale, EcoLogo-certified wind and low-impact hydro projects. Ecologo considers the environmental, social, and economic impacts of a project, and requires that communities be consulted during each project’s development.

EcoLogo also requires that land use, cultural values, and risk of biodiversity loss be addressed, and it prohibits any adverse impacts on endangered or threatened species.

While all forms of power generation will impact the Earth in some way, we choose EcoLogo-certified projects because they are the most environmentally friendly projects in Canada.

Misinformation

Some spurious claims suggest that building and running renewable energy sources has a higher carbon footprint than just burning fossil fuels in the first place. This has been debunked in many studies, including by the IPCC.

Including infrastructure and supply chain emissions, wind power has a total carbon footprint of between 7 and 56 grams of CO2 per kilowatt hour—the turbines Bullfrog supports are at the lower end of that spectrum. Solar power’s carbon footprint is between 18 and 180 grams per kilowatt hour. Coal power and natural gas' footprints are much higher, at an average of more than 1,000 and 500 grams per kilowatt hour, respectively. In short, even the worst renewable project is much greener than the best fossil fuel-based plant. 

Another important point that is often omitted is that the more renewable energy projects we have, the less we will have to rely on fossil fuels to build the next generation of renewables. Thanks to the projects Muskoka Roastery supports, Canada’s energy grid—and any new developments it powers—is greener. If we achieve our goal of a 100% renewable energy system, the carbon footprint of a renewable project will be close to zero.
